Who can vote
You can qualify either as a Salt Spring resident elector or as a non-resident property elector. You cannot register in both categories.
Resident voters
You must:
- be 18 or older on October 17;
- be a Canadian citizen;
- have lived in BC for at least six months before registering;
- live on Salt Spring; and
- not be disqualified from voting by law.
Renters vote as resident electors on the same terms as property owners. There is no minimum period that you must have lived on Salt Spring.
If you voted in the last provincial election from your current address, you should already be on the voters list. If not, you can still register when you vote.
Non-resident property voters
You must:
- live elsewhere in BC and have been a BC resident for at least six months;
- have held registered title to the Salt Spring property for at least 30 days;
- not qualify as a resident voter on Salt Spring; and
- meet the same age, citizenship and legal eligibility rules.
Only one person may vote for each property. For jointly owned property, the voter must be one of the owners and have written consent from enough co-owners to form a majority.
You may register for only one property. Corporations cannot vote, and an individual cannot qualify when a corporation is also on the title.
Register when you vote
The advance-registration deadlines have passed, but eligible voters can still register in person at a voting place or through the mail-ballot process.
Residents and renters
Bring two documents that show who you are and where you live. At least one must have your signature.
If your documents do not show your address, bring two identity documents, including one with your signature, and make a solemn declaration of your Salt Spring address at the voting place.
Non-resident property owners
Bring a recent land title search or property tax notice showing all registered owners, plus two pieces of identification with at least one signature.
If the property is jointly owned, also bring the completed Non-Resident Property Elector Application & Consent Form.
Examples of accepted identification
BC driver's licence, BC Services Card, BCID, utility bill, credit or debit card, and property tax notice. The CRD may accept other documents that provide satisfactory evidence.
The CRD runs this election on behalf of the Islands Trust, and its official notices are the final word. Check the CRD local elections page, CRD voter information, Elections BC, and the Islands Trust elections page for updates.
